The Video Platform Offers The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains over 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a global release. This development comes amid a rise in AI-generated material, spurred by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site primarily display AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is typically absurd or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to offer the community the ability to adjust the amount of that, according to their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as artificially created. Collectively, in excess of 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of AI content they see by opening the “manage topic” feature in the platform and picking the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be adjusted under the tool include current affairs, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s guidelines require content makers to label lifelike artificially created content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the platform will henceforth apply an AI-generated watermark to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is intended to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and groups to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies dedicated to training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has justified its safety measures, following debate over proposals to lay off numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection department in its British office, with labor groups and online safety experts expressing worry that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by filtering out the most graphic content before it has to be seen by people. The company reported a notable drop in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
